6 Ways To Add The Health Benefits Of Turmeric To Your Diet
Spice up your week with this week’s featured spice, turmeric! If you haven’t heard of the amazing health and wellness properties of this stunner, we’ll let you in on the secret! Turmeric is composed of the super health beneficial phytochemical, curcuminoid which is said to offer the natural benefits of an anti depressant and anti inflammatory, to manage arthritis and diabetes, to help in gastrointestinal and cholesterol issues, and act as a natural painkiller. The health benefits of turmeric include the ability to fight cancer, to reduce heart disease risk, and even to whiten your teeth! As you can see the incentives to add turmeric to your diet are numerous, so we’ve done some research and provided you with six appetizing (and easy) ways to incorporate the spice into your food and life!
1. Turmeric Tea.
Brew yourself some turmeric tea. Given that tea is already calming and conducive to wellness, including some cancer fighting turmeric will only add to the experience. Purchase pre-made turmeric tea, or brew your own! This simple recipe suggests as follows:
“Take four cups of water and bring it to a boil. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for at least 10 minutes. Strain this using a fine sieve. Add lemon for taste.” There are several possible variations of this recipe depending on personal preference including adding ginger, honey or coconut water.
2. Homemade Mustard.
Yumfest! We love this one because you can season anything you want with your magic turmeric mustard concoction! Whip it up and spread some antioxidant goodness on a sandwich or serve some up in a dish for pretzel dipping.
Vani Hari, aka “Food Babe” provides some basic instructions: “½ cup ground mustard, 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon water, 1 teaspoon each of turmeric and salt. Store in a glass jar in the fridge.”
3. Turmeric-Based Products.
Find great products that use turmeric as an ingredient. Some companies are already privy to the health benefits of turmeric and have crafted quality snacks featuring the super spice. Inspired by the spices and flavors from street food in India, The Chaat Co.’s line of savory yogurts have no added sugar, and fresh, new flavors like mango chili with a lentil puff topping made from sea salt, cumin and… you guessed it, turmeric. Their yogurts are original, delicious, whole, and healthy and are available to many of you lucky health conscious folks on the east coast.
4. Turmeric Smoothie.
In scouring yummy turmeric recipes, we came across several for “turmeric golden milk” but doesn’t a smoothie sound more appetizing? This Tropical Turmeric Smoothie recipe from Healthy Smoothie Headquarters includes our featured star spice along with coconut milk, mango, banana and a few other tasty flavoring agents.
5. Turmeric Sprinkle.
Loving this effortless suggestion from Food Babe: “Sprinkle on an avocado: This is an awesome snack, full of fiber and just enough fat to keep you from indulging in unhealthy processed snacks from the vending machine. Another variation is to mash the avocado, mix in some ground turmeric, a dash of sea salt, a dash of black pepper, and spread it on sprouted bread or brown rice crackers or cakes.”
6. Turmeric Pancakes.
For those of you breakfast nuts, we have turmeric, cinnamon, pumpkin pancakes! Produce on Parade provides their adaptation of a vegan recipe for these antioxidant, power-punching fluff cakes! Looks delicious and like the perfect treat for these cold, winter mornings… or enjoy with some syrup and Halo Top ice cream for a deceptively nutritious dessert!
You can find turmeric in most health food stores but word to the wise – you want to find either organic ground turmeric or fresh turmeric root from the produce section! There are low quality powdered forms of the spice that won’t provide all the wonderful benefits the good stuff has to offer. Happy cooking and have a turmerific day!
