Content: I’ve enjoyed watching Jamie Durie on various garden shows such as HGTV, and the Oprah Winfrey Show makeover segments, but this is the first of his books I’ve read. I wasn’t disappointed….it’s well written in his friendly, direct, and charming style.
The topic of adding edibles to your garden is a hot one now. And for good reason: the benefits of having these interesting and often beautiful edible plantings mixed in among your garden beds are plentiful! The most obvious of course, is that you have the benefit of harvesting and eating the fruits of your labor! For those readers with kids, it’s a proven fact that kids tend to try more varieties of fruits and vegetables when they’re involved in growing them. It’s a great way to encourage even the adults to try out some new edibles, beyond kale and blueberries.
Jamie Durie covers a full range of topics regarding this edible garden design, presenting ideas and sharing examples of many gardeners who incorporate edibles into their gardens, or even started with edibles and built their entire yard around them.
In this book, Durie covers topics from initial design of your garden in general, to the concept of adding edibles, Vertical Gardens, Kitchen Gardens reinvented, Community Connections, Permaculture, and a section titled “An Edible Future” where he shares some of the new ideas being tried out around the world.
Throughout the book, Durie shares example of real people who’ve implemented the practice of edible gardening mixed with their overall garden design, and makes it clear that any one of us can try, and be successful with this gardening method. Very inspirational!
