Content: This is one of my new favorite books for so many reasons!
In many urban areas, gardeners are starting to utilize the formerly grass only parking strips along their front yard sidewalks, incorporating them into the rest of their front and side yards. This book walks you through from initial inspiration with gorgeous photos and examples from across the US, to addressing specific situations such as poor soil, laws and covenants, public perception of these gardens, solutions for designing, building & managing the space, and ends with 40+ pages of plant suggestions. There are additional resources listed at the back of the book for hardiness zones, and further reading.
My strong passion for this book is based upon the excellent format (easy reading, but not dumbed down content), gorgeous photos that will inspire readers to try some new ideas, as well as the direct attention paid to challenges gardeners may face in their areas as they incorporate these formerly grass or weedy wastelands to production, publicly enjoyable, and inspirational gardens! The author includes ways to use waterwise garden methods, flowers, grasses, decor and trees within these spaces. With the many different regional examples profiled, one is sure to see examples that will work in their garden area and zones. Readers are sure to turn to this book many times as they tackle this new garden space in their yards.
Photos: Many large, beautiful photos!
